HD DVD Releases now outselling Bluray counterparts!?
We have watched eagerly over the last few months as HD DVD sales have edged closer and closer to the front, eroding the Bluray lead which was established at the launch of the PS3.
In fact, since the 2nd of September, HD DVD has taken almost 40% of the HD Media sales, when one averages the Nielsen numbers - a radical turnaround from the 75% share that Bluray fans were making so much noise about at the start of the year. But this number does not take into account the sales and promotions that Bluray have been undertaking in order to try to maintain their lead.
However, in a shocking revelation, we are now hearing that HD DVD releases may now be outselling their Bluray counterparts! This is very important, since it indicates that on a "like for like" release to both formats, HD DVD is outselling Bluray! Specifically, we are hearing that Warner's "Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix" on HD DVD is selling about the same as it's Bluray counterpart!
Also, Universal's HD DVD release of their blockbuster "Bourne Ultimatum" outsold Sony's equivalent blockbuster, Spiderman 3 on Bluray, by a 2 to 1 margin for their respective first week sales!
Do you think it's a coincidence that all the Nielsen sales threads on various forums have been "packed up" and deleted? The most recent news doesn't appear to be very exciting for Bluray...
My 15 week rolling average that I based on data released from Nielsen, and posted to those various extinct threads showed HD DVD's share of the HDM market going from about 28% in late April, to almost 40% in December. Note that Nielsen FA is not an estimate of the entire market, but only covers specific retailers.
And the news that Warner titles are showing a 50:50 split between the two formats cannot be great for BD.
UPDATE - 29th December 2007!
It looks like all those HD DVD players under the tree for the holidays have now been opened and new owners are buying movies in the droves!
HD DVD movie sales have shot thru the roof and have soared past Bluray!
