HD DVD is One Year Old! Let’s Celebrate!
HD DVD is officially now one year old! (or is that one year NEW?) To celebrate, a bunch of folks on the forums, including in a thread on AVSforum, have suggested that we celebrate by going out and buying as many movies as possible in the week starting April 15th (Sunday).
This is easy to consider – thanks to GREAT films now on the way, like The Matrix Trilogy (only on HD DVD for the time being!) and many, many more – covered in these pages here, and here.
In fact - there's ANOTHER reason to celebrate! HD DVD sales have just moved out in front, ahead of Bluray once again. And this is likely to be the trend for good, now. Let's keep it this way by celebrating together!
Personally, I’m going to buy a bunch starting on Monday the 16th and ending on Thursday the 19th. Why? Because I want to make sure that my purchases are taken into account in the Nielsen Videoscan sales numbers, which are being tracked so closely by all the parties interested in the “format war”. I have linked some vendors, who are supposed to be tracked by Nielsen Videoscan, in the movies list. If you like this idea, pick your favorite films, from the list I have provided for you here..
The Bluray camp made a lot of noise in January and February that their sales had finally passed HD DVD movie sales, based on new PS3 owners at Christmas and a 2 week “50% off retail list” sale that ran in early March.
BUT – the big news! In late March Bluray sales figure plummeted and HD DVD sales jumped up again. In the last week, HD DVD sales have not only drawn alongside BD sales again but have passed them, putting BD back in second place!
I predicted long ago that the temporary surge that BD got from PS3 owners would not last, as the BD movie attach rate for PS3 owners is abysmally low, something along the order of 0.37 movies, as best I can calculate. I also predicted that HD DVD would once again take the lead, as the HD DVD players are much better and much better value than BD, due to features like TrueHD, network ports and better IME through the HDi. Also, it does not seem that current BD standalone players will ever be able to comply with the new BD 1.1 Video standard that Bluray is saying they will adopt this year.
So celebrate HD DVD! Get busy and support your favorite format now by snapping up as many copies of your favorite films as you like!
