The High Definition DVD Studio Support Petition Campaign

About Us and this site

Sometime in 2006, a group of Home Theater and Home Video enthusiasts started a petition campaign to persuade studios not yet supporting the superior High Definition DVD (HD DVD) format, to start doing so.

The response was surprising, with more than 1,100 people like you and I signing up to the initial petition. So we decided to become more organized. On October 6th 2006 we started a new version of the petition, and on October 9th we launched this website to be the main tool to rally supporters.

At last count, we are now about 7,000 people strong - and we now aim to reach 10,000 people!

Our goal is to let movie studios know that we prefer the HD DVD format to the competing Blu-Ray format, which launched after HD DVD, and helped start the current "format war" (so reminiscent of the VHS/Betamax fiasco). Also, HD DVD is the official next-gen DVD format, sanctioned by the DVD Forum.

We believe that High Definition DVD (HD DVD) is the best and most consumer-friendly next-generation video format. At one-half, to one-third, of the price of the "other brand", HD DVD has been delivering the most consistent picture quality and ownership experience.

We ask that the Bluray-exclusive studios support the HD DVD format with movie releases. HD DVD has the cheapest cost of entry and the best real-world performance. HD DVD is established with hundreds of thousands of owners, and will always be a valid movie medium. HD DVD has the lowest cost of production for discs, the best working replication technology, the cheapest transistion re-engineering, the most advanced standard player specification, and working players that are not struggling to get to the "real, honest, I promise next time" standard specification like the Bluray format.

We are looking for more High Definition enthusiasts to join our call to those studios which have not yet started releasing movies in the High Definition DVD format – to say to them: “High Definition DVD has got the PICTURE, the SOUND, the VALUE, the Happiest Customers and the MOST value! What are you waiting for?! Please release movies in HD DVD!”

We also intend to also push for more support of the High Definition DVD format with other entities within the industry, such as manufacturers and the media.

What we are...

We are regular men and women like you who have a love for high-quality Home Entertainment.

We expect the very best from our pre-recorded High Definition movie purchases. If a High Definition disc does not exceed the quality of what we can already get on cable or satellite, then we don't want it. We feel that what we buy on disc should exceed the quality of what we can already get "over the air".

We have home setups ranging from a $600 "HD Ready" 720p TV, up to 10 foot-plus 3-chip projector systems with 7.1 surround audio.

We are objective and open-minded and feel that as consumers, we have the right to choose our own preferred platforms.

What we are not...

The purpose of this site is not to "bash" the competition. However, since there is currently a "format war" taking place between them, it is incumbent upon us to explain why we believe that the High Definition DVD format is a better and more consumer-friendly format than Blu-Ray.

To do so requires that we demonstrate why we have chosen HD DVD as our preferred format. There are some ugly truths about the opposing Bluray format that some don't like to be talked about. But we WILL talk about them, and unmask the truth.

We are not "fanboys" or "Blu-Ray Bashers". Nor are we "Sony haters" or "undercover operatives" or any of the nicknames sometime ascribed by fans of the other side in online discussion groups. I myself am writing this from my Sony VAIO computer, with my Sony Clie and Sony-Ericsson Samsung BlackJack phone by my side, with my Sony XBR TV Samsung 9546 TV on in the background. It's unfortunate that Sony supporters, and indeed some of the managers, use the word "haters" so much - but that doesn't deter us.

We do not see this as some conspiracy to hurt anyone on the other side. Merely, an opportunity to get fair studio support for what is the dominant format at this time, level the playing field and support what we see as a more consumer-friendly format for all of us. The studios we are targeting should do what's best for their customers by supporting HD DVD, in addition to the other format, so that the consumers can make the choice. But based on the moounting evidence - this is ALSO what is best for the studios, not just because of the accelerating sales of HD DVD players, but because of the lower costs and increased profitability of the HD DVD format.
