What are people saying about HD DVD and Blu-Ray?
Since we have two whole sections dedicated to reviews of the HD DVD and Bluray formats, we'll just cover a sample of two excerpts from reviewers first, then go through what other people are saying.
Most people, reviewers and regular consumers alike, have been of one mind about HD DVD and Bluray - that HD DVD came out of the starting gate in fine form, firing off the very best High Definition quality that had ever been seen in a consumer video format - and that Bluray came out of the gate without their saddle or horse...
We are in the process of linking discussions from online forums, also, where the early adopters and the experts have been discussing the formats at length... stay tuned!
How about the Reviewers?
If you look at HD DVD and Bluray reviews at all the "reputable" and established DVD review sites, you will consistently observe this trend. Interestingly, a couple of seemingly "new" sites have popped up recently which have heaped "glowing praise" on Bluray releases - often claiming that they are better than the equivalent HD DVD releases.
Be immediately suspicious of any sites which make such claims...
OK - so onto a sample of the reviewers:
"I took longer than most to buy into HDTV, but I've watched well over 150 movies in high def along with countless hours of TV shows, concerts, sports, and video games over the past couple of years. I mention all of this not to brag, as if that's really something to cheer about in the first place, but to try to put it in perspective when I say that Æon Flux boasts the most jaw-droppingly impressive video I've seen from any source to date.

"Holy crap in a can, this disc looks horrible! I've written a couple of previous Blu-ray reviews where I'd called certain discs the worst High Definition image I'd ever seen, thinking HD couldn't possibly get any worse, but here Sony just keeps lowering the bar for the format."
DVD Talk – Review of RoboCop on Bluray by Joshua Zyber, August 15, 2006
Wow! Talk about two completely different video formats. High Definition DVD launched to almost universal accolades and praise, regarding the picture quality and presentation achieved by the format and quickly established a distinct aura of credibility
On the other hand, Blu-Ray launched to an almost universal barrage of criticism and disappointment. The Picture quality of Bluray releases was so bad that it quickly developed a host of dismissive nicknames from both supporters and detractors, and some Bluray movies were even renamed by fans to reflect their disappointment.
Sony’s reaction to the disastrous launch of their much-touted format, it seems, included blaming the negative Picture-Quality reviews of Bluray on the first and only Bluray player to make it to market – the Samsung BD-P1000 - and the sudden departure of Benjamin Feingold at Sony Pictures and (in my opinion) a campaign of misleading information (such as this interview and the resulting discussion)
